1. Overview of the Relationship

India–China relations are defined by a "cooperation–competition–conflict" triad: two ancient civilisations and the world's two most populous nations, together holding ~35% of humanity, who are simultaneously large trade partners, fellow members of BRICS, SCO and the G20, and rivals along an un-delimited 3,488-km frontier. Since the Galwan clash of June 2020 the relationship has been at a post-1962 low, only partially eased by the October 2024 disengagement at Depsang and Demchok and a leader-level thaw at the Kazan BRICS Summit (2024) and the SCO Tianjin Summit (2025).

Guiding formula (India's stated position): ties can be normal only with peace and tranquility on the border; relations rest on mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.
Scale: China is again India's largest trading partner (bilateral trade ~US$151 bn), even as India runs a record deficit of ~US$116 bn (2025).
Structural tensions: the boundary dispute, the China–Pakistan "all-weather" nexus (CPEC, two-front risk), Chinese encirclement in the Indian Ocean, hydrological leverage over the Brahmaputra, and blocking of India at the UNSC/NSG.

2. Evolution & Diplomatic History (to 2026)

The arc runs from civilisational contact and early solidarity, through the trauma of 1962, to normalisation, a trade-led boom, and the recent security-driven downturn and cautious repair.

3. The Boundary Question & Three Sectors

The India–China boundary was never formally delimited. It is analysed in three sectors, each with its own competing colonial-era alignment.

4. The 1962 War & Aftermath

Backdrop: China's annexation of Tibet (1950) removed the buffer; the Dalai Lama's asylum (1959) angered Beijing; India's "Forward Policy" of establishing posts collided with rival maps over Aksai Chin and NEFA (Arunachal).
The war (20 Oct–21 Nov 1962): China attacked simultaneously in the western sector (Aksai Chin) and the eastern sector (NEFA), overran forward posts, then declared a unilateral ceasefire and withdrew in the east while retaining Aksai Chin.
Outcome: China consolidated ~38,000 sq km of Aksai Chin; the illusion of "Hindi-Chini Bhai-Bhai" collapsed; the war exposed grave gaps in India's military preparedness, intelligence and higher defence management.
Legacy: a durable trust deficit; a spur to defence modernisation, mountain warfare capacity and border roads; and a sober re-appraisal of non-alignment and of dealing with an assertive China.

Link to doctrine: 1962 remains the reference point for every subsequent standoff — it frames why India insists on verified disengagement and buffer zones rather than verbal assurances.

5. The Line of Actual Control (LAC)

What it is: the effective military line separating Indian- and Chinese-held territory — roughly 3,488 km, running through Ladakh, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal; not mutually delineated on the ground or on agreed maps.
Differing perceptions: the two sides hold divergent claim lines at many points, producing "transgressions", patrol face-offs and periodic standoffs. India has pressed for an exchange of maps to clarify the LAC; China has resisted.
Not the boundary: the LAC is a de-facto line of control; the boundary question (a final, delimited and demarcated border) remains unsettled and is handled through the SR mechanism.
Key friction points: Depsang, Galwan, Hot Springs (Gogra), Pangong Tso, Demchok (Western sector); Naku La (Sikkim); Yangtse near Tawang (Eastern sector).

Distinction to remember: LoC (with Pakistan, from the 1972 Shimla Agreement, delineated) vs LAC (with China, undelineated). Do not conflate the two.

6. Flashpoints: Doklam & Galwan

Doklam (2017)

What: a 73-day standoff at the India–China–Bhutan tri-junction (Doka La), triggered when the PLA tried to extend a road southward through territory Bhutan claims.
India's role: intervened on Bhutan's behalf under its special relationship, blocking the road; resolved by mutual disengagement ahead of the 2017 Xiamen BRICS Summit.
Significance: the tri-junction's proximity to the Siliguri Corridor ("Chicken's Neck") — India's sole land link to the North-East — made this a first-order strategic contest.

Galwan (June 2020)

What: a violent hand-to-hand clash in the Galwan Valley (eastern Ladakh, Western sector); 20 Indian soldiers were killed — the first border fatalities since 1975 — alongside Chinese casualties.
India's response: banned 200+ Chinese apps; tightened FDI via Press Note 3 (2020); forward-deployed additional troops and matched infrastructure; ran multiple rounds of Corps-Commander talks.

Launched by China in 2013, the BRI pairs the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt with the sea-based 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road. It spans 100+ countries, ~70% of world population and over half of global GDP. India is the most prominent non-participant.

13. Tsangpo Mega-Dam & Water Security

China, the upper riparian, is building the world's largest hydropower project — a ~60,000 MW dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) at the Great Bend in Medog County, near Arunachal Pradesh — giving it powerful hydrological leverage over India and Bangladesh.
