1. Peninsular Drainage — Character & Divide

The Peninsular rivers are old, graded and rain-fed. They flow in broad, shallow, largely fixed valleys carved into hard plateau rock, and (except the two great rift rivers) they lack the deep gorges and shifting braids of the Himalayan rivers.

Rain-fed & seasonal: they depend on the monsoon alone, so flow drops sharply in the dry season (contrast: perennial Himalayan rivers).
Graded & stable: being old, they are near base level with fixed courses and small loads — little lateral shifting.
The Western Ghats water-divide: the Ghats run close to the west coast and act as the main divide — most rivers rise there and flow east to the Bay of Bengal, building deltas; a few flow west to the Arabian Sea in estuaries.

2. West-flowing Rift Rivers: Narmada & Tapi

Two Peninsular rivers flow west in fault-guided rift valleys (grabens) — a striking exception explained by block faulting between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges. They carry no delta; they end in wide estuaries.

Why they flow west: the Narmada and Tapi did not carve their valleys — they occupy pre-existing faults/grabens formed by block-faulting of the plateau. The trough already sloped west to the Arabian Sea, so the rivers followed it, and the confined valley leaves no room for a delta → estuaries instead.

Luni is the only significant river of the arid west; it rises in the Aravalli, turns brackish downstream and disappears into the Rann of Kutch — an inland-draining (endorheic) river.
West-coast rivers are short & swift because the Western Ghats stand close to the sea, giving a steep, narrow catchment — ideal for waterfalls and hydropower (Sharavati/Jog, Periyar).

Concept: the Mahi crossing the Tropic of Cancer twice, and the Luni ending in the Rann (never reaching the sea), are favourite factual hooks — both flow through the arid west of the Peninsula.

4. The Godavari — Dakshin Ganga

The Godavari is the largest Peninsular river by length and basin — the "Dakshin Ganga" (Ganga of the South). It rises in the Western Ghats and flows east across the Deccan to a large delta on the Bay of Bengal.

6. The Kaveri System

The Kaveri (Cauvery) is the southernmost great Peninsular river — the "Ganga of the South" of Tamil culture — famous for its year-round flow (both monsoons) and its inter-state dispute.

7. Mahanadi & Other East-flowing Rivers

A lake is an inland body of standing water. India's lakes span many origins — tectonic, glacial, volcanic-crater, fluvial (oxbow), coastal (lagoon) and man-made — each with signature examples.
