Conceptual Clarity — Why this Chapter Matters
Forest types, the ISFR and forest laws are dense Prelims fodder; forest governance & the FRA are heavy GS-III/GS-I. Sort your prep three ways:

Territorial note: India's forests span the whole northern belt including Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, which are Indian sovereign territory; the LoC and LAC are not settled international borders.
1. Controls on Natural Vegetation
Natural vegetation is plant cover left to grow undisturbed for long, adjusting to soil & climate. In India it is controlled chiefly by rainfall, then temperature, soil and relief.
- Rainfall (master control): sets the broad evergreen → deciduous → thorn sequence.
- Temperature: gives the vertical (altitudinal) belts on mountains — tropical to alpine.
- Soil & relief: mangroves on saline deltaic mud; alpine meadows on high slopes; edaphic swamp forests on waterlogged ground.
2. Champion & Seth Classification (1968)
H. G. Champion & S. K. Seth (1968) gave the standard classification of India's forests into major groups (with 16 types). The exam-relevant broad groups:

3. Tropical Evergreen & Semi-Evergreen
The rainforests of the wettest India — tall, dense, multi-storeyed, evergreen (no leaf-shedding season).
- Where: windward Western Ghats, the north-east, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands (rainfall >200 cm).
- Character: tall (up to 45–60 m), lofty, hard-wood, no clear dry season; rich biodiversity.
- Species: rosewood, mahogany, ebony, aini, cinchona, bamboo; NE has dipterocarps.
- Semi-evergreen: transitional between evergreen & deciduous, in slightly less wet margins.
4. Tropical Deciduous (Monsoon) Forest
The most widespread forest of India — the classic "monsoon forest" that sheds leaves in the dry season to save water.

- Sal: dominates the moist-deciduous belt of eastern MP, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha & the sub-Himalaya.
- Teak: dominates the drier central & western peninsula (MP, Maharashtra, Karnataka).
- Value: the most commercially exploited forests — timber (teak, sal), tendu (bidi), much cleared for farming.
5. Thorn, Montane & Littoral Forests
Beyond the deciduous belt lie the dry thorn scrub, the altitudinal mountain forests, and the coastal swamp/mangrove forests.
- Tropical thorn & scrub (<70 cm): NW India (Thar), leeward Deccan — acacia (babul, kikar), khejri, cactus, euphorbia; xerophytic, thorny, deep-rooted.
- Montane Himalayan (S→N with altitude): tropical foothills → wet/moist temperate (oak, chestnut, deodar, pine, silver fir) → alpine (juniper, rhododendron) → alpine meadows (bugyal/marg) → tundra/snow.
- Montane southern (sholas): stunted evergreen "shola" forests with grassland in the Nilgiris, Anaimalai & Palni hills.
- Littoral & swamp (mangroves): salt-tolerant tidal forests of deltas & coasts — Sundarbans (largest; Rhizophora, Avicennia, Sonneratia, sundari tree), Bhitarkanika, Godavari–Krishna delta, Gulf of Kachchh; stilt/pneumatophore roots.
6. Forest Cover Status (ISFR)
The Forest Survey of India (FSI) publishes the biennial India State of Forest Report (ISFR) measuring forest & tree cover by satellite.
- Cover: forest cover is roughly ~21–22% of India's area, tree+forest cover ~24–25% — below the 33% policy goal. check for latest update or data
- Density classes: Very Dense Forest (canopy ≥70%), Moderately Dense (40–70%), Open Forest (10–40%), Scrub (<10%).
- Highest cover (area): Madhya Pradesh (largest forest area); by % — the NE states (Mizoram, Arunachal, etc.) & island UTs.
- Recorded vs actual: "recorded forest area" (legal) differs from satellite "forest cover" (actual green canopy, incl. plantations & orchards).
7. Forest Policy & Legislation
India's forest governance rests on a policy goal and a set of Acts balancing conservation, diversion & tribal rights.

9. Forest Products & Economy
Forests yield timber and a large basket of minor / non-timber forest produce (NTFP) that sustains tribal livelihoods.
- Timber: teak, sal, deodar, rosewood — construction & furniture.
- NTFP / MFP: tendu leaves (bidi), bamboo, lac, honey, resin, gums, tasar silk, mahua, sal seed, medicinal herbs.
- MSP for MFP: a scheme gives minimum support prices for minor forest produce to tribals; bamboo reclassified as grass (outside felling rules) to aid harvest.
