1.2 India's place on the globe

Hemispherical position: Entirely in Northern & Eastern hemispheres.
Sub-continental position: India is the largest of seven countries in the Indian Subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives) — separated from rest of Asia by the Himalayas in the north.
Oceanic position: India is the only country to have an ocean named after it. The peninsula juts ~1 600 km into the Indian Ocean — bordered by Arabian Sea (W), Bay of Bengal (E), Indian Ocean (S).
Locational advantage: Sits astride trans-Indian Ocean trade routes connecting Europe-Africa (via Suez/Bab-el-Mandeb) with East & SE Asia (via Malacca Strait) — the "transit point" of the Old World.

UPSC factoid: India accounts for only 2.4 % of world's land area but supports ~17.8 % of humanity — the demographic-area mismatch underpins India's population, food security & resource policy debates.

2 · Latitudinal & longitudinal extent

2.1 The four cardinal coordinates

UPSC trap: Many older NCERTs and coaching notes still cite "6°4′N" as India's southernmost — that was Indira Point's pre-tsunami coordinate. After the 26 Dec 2004 tsunami, Indira Point's lighthouse subsided ~4 m and the coordinate is now ~6°30′ N. Both 8°4′ N (mainland — Kanyakumari) and 6°45′ N / 6°30′ N (entire India — Indira Point) are accepted depending on whether the question asks "mainland" or "entire territory".

2.2 N-S and E-W extents — equal yet asymmetric

North-South extent = ~3 214 km · 30° of latitude (37°6′ − 6°45′ ≈ 30.4°)
East-West extent = ~2 933 km · ~29° of longitude (97°25′ − 68°7′ ≈ 29.3°)
Why N-S looks longer despite similar degree-spread: 1° of latitude is constant (~111 km); 1° of longitude shrinks with cos(latitude) — at India's mean latitude ~23°, 1° longitude ≈ 102 km. Hence 29° E-W ≈ 2 933 km, while 30° N-S ≈ 3 214 km.
Implication: India is roughly quadrangular in shape — the popular description "stretching from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Kutch to Kibithu" captures the four diagonal extremes.

3 · Tropic of Cancer & the Standard Meridian

3.1 Tropic of Cancer (23°30′ N) — through 8 states

The Tropic of Cancer enters India through Gujarat (Kachchh) and exits via Mizoram. The mnemonic "Gu-Ra-MP-Chh-Jha-WB-Tri-Mi" captures the sequence west-to-east.

Mnemonic — Tropic of Cancer 8 states (W→E): "Gujarati Rajputs Marched to Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura & Mizoram" · short form: Gu-Ra-MP-Chh-Jha-WB-Tri-Mi.

UPSC trick — does NOT pass: Bihar, Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya — these are frequently set as wrong options. Bihar is just north of Jharkhand and the Tropic does not enter Bihar.

3.2 Standard Meridian — 82°30′ E (Mirzapur, UP)

India adopted the 82°30′ E meridian as the Standard Meridian — passing through Mirzapur (UP), near Naini (Allahabad / Prayagraj). It is exactly 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT/UTC — hence IST = UTC + 5:30.

Reason for choice: 82°30′E was the meridian closest to the geographical centre of India and divisible by 7.5° (15° = 1 hr → 7.5° = 30 min), giving a clean UTC+5:30 offset.
Meridian passes through 5 states: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh.
The only Indian states the Standard Meridian crosses are those above — easy MCQ trick.

3.3 East-West sunrise gap — the 2-time-zone debate

Longitudinal span 68°7′E to 97°25′E ≈ 29°18′. Earth rotates 1° in 4 minutes ⇒ ~117 minutes ≈ 1 hr 57 min sunrise gap between Kibithu (Arunachal) and Guhar Moti (Kutch).
Net result: sun rises in Arunachal almost 2 hours before Gujarat, but everyone follows the same IST.
NE productivity loss debate: by ~4 pm in November, it is already dark in Arunachal/Assam — but offices, schools follow IST clocks. Council of Scientific & Industrial Research's NPL proposed (2018) a second time zone (IST-II, UTC+6:00) for NE states (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, A&N). Govt has so far rejected, citing concerns of fragmentation, railway-timetable safety, missed train collisions at boundary stations.
Earlier (until 1947) India had 3 time zones — Bombay Time, Calcutta Time, Madras Time. Standardised to IST after independence.

4 · Land frontier & coastline

4.1 Land frontier — 15 200 km

Total length of India's international land boundary = ~15 200 km (MHA / BSF data; estimates range 15 106 – 15 200 km).
17 States + 2 UTs share an international land boundary (counts vary slightly by source). The 2 UTs are Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
India shares land borders with 7 countries — Bangladesh, China, Pakistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan, Afghanistan (via PoK).

4.2 Coastline — 7 516.6 km

UPSC-style update (June 2024): The National Centre for Coastal Research (NCRC) re-measured India's coastline using high-resolution geospatial data and reported ~11 098 km (because more inlets, bays, creeks are now captured). The MHA / Survey of India figure of 7 516.6 km remains official until formally revised. For UPSC Prelims, use 7 516.6 km unless the question explicitly cites the 2024 NCRC reassessment.

India shares land borders with 7 countries, maritime boundaries with 2 island neighbours (Sri Lanka, Maldives), and shares EEZ proximity with 6 more in the Indian Ocean Region. Total often quoted as "India has 9 neighbours" (7 land + 2 maritime); broader count = 15 (adds Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar's maritime edge, Iran via Arabian Sea, Oman).

5.2 The 2 maritime neighbours

Sri Lanka — separated from India by the Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar; connected by the chain of shoals known as Adam's Bridge / Ram Setu; closest point — Dhanushkodi (TN) to Talaimannar (SL) ~ 30 km.
Maldives — southwest of India in the Indian Ocean; nearest point to Lakshadweep ~ 400 km.

5.3 EEZ-adjacent / extended IOR neighbours

Indonesia — Indira Point (India's southernmost) lies just ~150 km from Indonesia's Banda Aceh / Pulau Rondo. India-Indonesia maritime boundary agreed 1974.
Thailand — north-east of A&N; India-Thailand maritime boundary 1978.
Malaysia — A&N adjacent EEZ.
Myanmar (also a land neighbour) — extensive maritime overlap in Bay of Bengal; ITLOS award 2014.
