2. Conceptual Clarity — WPA Schedules & Reading IUCN Codes

Every species table in this file carries two different classification systems side by side — the IUCN Red List category (a global, scientific extinction-risk assessment) and the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 Schedule (an Indian domestic legal protection level). UPSC frequently conflates or tests the two separately — never assume a species' Schedule tracks its IUCN status exactly (e.g., Sarus Crane is only "Vulnerable" but its Schedule IV status gives it lower legal penalty than Schedule I species).

Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 — Schedule Structure

Originally the Act had six Schedules (I–VI), ranging from Schedule I (highest protection, harshest penalties) down to Schedule V (vermin — species that could be legally hunted, e.g. common crows, fruit bats, mice) and Schedule VI (specified plants). The Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act, 2022 restructured this into just four Schedules, removing the vermin category altogether and aligning India's plant/animal trade schedule directly with CITES Appendices.
