Coral Reefs & Coral Bleaching — the Mechanism

  • Corals live in symbiosis with zooxanthellae — microscopic algae (dinoflagellates) inside coral tissue that photosynthesise, giving corals colour + up to ~90% of their energy.
  • Bleaching = under thermal/acidification/pollution stress, corals expel the zooxanthellae, turn white, and lose their food source. Prolonged bleaching → coral death.
