1. Overview & Origins

Bhakti means loving devotion to a personal God as the path to salvation. Though the idea is old — rooted in the Bhagavad Gita and the Bhagavata Purana — as a mass movement it began in the Tamil south (7th–9th c.) and swept north over the medieval centuries, offering a direct, egalitarian alternative to priest-mediated ritual.

Meaning: Bhakti = intense, personal love for God; salvation comes through devotion (bhakti) and grace, not birth, ritual or Sanskrit learning.
Origins: the movement crystallised among the Tamil Alvars (Vishnu) and Nayanars (Shiva) in the 6th–9th centuries, then diffused northward from the 12th century.
Common features: a single loving God, a guru's guidance, use of the vernacular (not Sanskrit), rejection of caste and elaborate ritual, and emotional song/poetry as worship.

Ramanuja is the pivotal figure — his Vishishtadvaita affirmed a personal Vishnu whose "body" is the world and souls, legitimising devotion within Vedanta and inspiring the north-Indian Bhakti chain via Ramananda.
Madhva and Nimbarka deepened theistic, dualist devotion; Nimbarka's Radha–Krishna worship prefigured later Krishna-bhakti.
Vallabha's Pushtimarg (path of grace) centred on Krishna and shaped the Ashtachhap poets, including Surdas.

4. Nirguna Saints

Ramananda is the hinge figure — a follower of Ramanuja's tradition who taught in the vernacular and accepted disciples from all castes (Kabir, Ravidas and, by tradition, others), transmitting Bhakti from south to north.
Kabir, the weaver-saint of Varanasi, preached a formless God uniting "Rama and Rahim"; his pithy dohas savaged caste, idolatry and clerical hypocrisy in both faiths. His verses enter the Guru Granth Sahib.
Guru Nanak taught one formless God (Ik Onkar), the equality of all, honest work and community kitchen (langar) — founding Sikhism as a distinct path.

Tulsidas rewrote the Rama story in Awadhi as the Ramcharitmanas, making Rama-devotion accessible to the masses and shaping north-Indian popular Hinduism.
Surdas, the blind Braj poet of Vallabha's tradition, sang of the child-Krishna in the Sursagar; Mirabai, the Rajput princess-saint, defied convention with ecstatic Krishna-bhakti.

6. The Maharashtra Dharma

Maharashtra developed its own long-lived Bhakti tradition centred on Vithoba (a form of Vishnu/Krishna) at Pandharpur. The Varkari saints, writing in Marathi, formed a continuous devotional lineage that fostered regional identity and, later, fed into the Maratha resurgence.
