Religion is tested as doctrine–founder–text–council matching ("Which Buddhist council was held under Kanishka?" / "Anekantavada belongs to which faith?"). The productive skill is a comparative grid across faiths. Sort your prep:

Static/factual — founders, core doctrines, sacred texts, councils, sects and symbols of each religion. High recall.
Thematic/doctrinal — the shared shramana (Buddhism, Jainism) vs brahmana (Vedic) streams; the "middle path" vs extreme asceticism; monism vs dualism. Structure.

1. Overview & Religions of India

India's religious landscape has two broad layers — the indigenous Dharmic faiths that arose here, and the Abrahamic and Zoroastrian faiths that came from West Asia and were absorbed. The Constitution makes India a secular republic guaranteeing freedom of religion (Articles 25–28).

Dharmic faiths share concepts of karma, rebirth (samsara) and liberation (moksha/nirvana/kaivalya), though they differ sharply on God, soul and ritual.
Shramana vs Brahmana: Buddhism and Jainism are shramana (ascetic, anti-Vedic-ritual) movements of the 6th c. BCE; Hinduism grew from the brahmana Vedic tradition.
Foreign faiths arrived early and peacefully by trade — Jews and Christians on the Kerala coast, Parsis fleeing Persia (Sanjan, Gujarat), and Islam via Arab traders and later conquest.

2. Hinduism

Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma) has no single founder or creed — it is a family of traditions growing from the Vedas through the Upanishads, epics and Puranas, expressed in major sects and six philosophical schools.

3. Buddhism

Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) in the 6th c. BCE. Its "middle path" rejects both indulgence and extreme asceticism, teaching the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path to end suffering.

Three vehicles: Hinayana/Theravada (Pali, individual liberation, Sri Lanka/SE Asia), Mahayana (bodhisattva ideal, Sanskrit, East Asia), Vajrayana (tantric, Tibet/Ladakh).
Councils: the 4th (Kanishka, Kashmir) formalised the Hinayana–Mahayana split; the 3rd (Ashoka, Pataliputra) sent missionaries as far as Sri Lanka.

4. Jainism

Mahavira (599–527 BCE) added the fifth vow (celibacy) and organised the community; Parshvanatha (23rd) had taught the first four.

Sects: Digambaras hold that monks own nothing (nudity) and that women cannot attain liberation without rebirth; Svetambaras wear white and disagree.

5. Sikhism

Guru Gobind Singh created the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib (1699) with the five Ks (Kesh, Kangha, Kara, Kachera, Kirpan) and ended the line of human Gurus, vesting authority in the Guru Granth Sahib.
Guru Arjan Dev compiled the Adi Granth and built the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) at Amritsar; he was the first Sikh martyr.

Zoroastrianism (Parsis): monotheistic, dualist (Ahura Mazda vs Angra Mainyu), venerates fire; the tiny Parsi community has an outsized role in industry and philanthropy (Tatas, Godrej).
Christianity is traditionally traced to St. Thomas the Apostle landing at Muziris (Kerala) in 52 CE — making the Syrian/Malabar Christians among the world's oldest.
Islam came first through peaceful Arab sea-trade to the Malabar coast (Cheraman Juma Masjid is regarded as India's oldest mosque), long before the Delhi Sultanate.

Exam tip: Both Buddhism and Jainism have a "Triratna," but Buddhist = Buddha/Dhamma/Sangha, Jain = right faith/knowledge/conduct. Buddhism & Jainism are nastika (reject Vedic authority); do not call them "atheistic Hindu sects."
