Conceptual Clarity — How UPSC Frames Painting

Painting is tested as school-discrimination (which style/site?) and technique/theme recognition (fresco vs tempera; Krishna-bhakti vs court portraiture). The productive skill is placing a described image in its school at a glance. Sort your prep:

Static/terminology — Shadanga (six limbs of painting), fresco-secco vs true fresco, site–dynasty pairs (Ajanta–Vakataka, Badami–Chalukya, Lepakshi–Vijayanagara), miniature-school markers (Jain "protruding eye", Kishangarh "Bani Thani"). High recall.

Note: India's painting heritage spans the whole subcontinent — from the Pahari valleys of the northern hills and Kashmir to the Deccan sultanates and the Tamil south; recovered manuscripts and murals are protected under the Antiquities & Art Treasures Act 1972.

1. Overview & the Two Streams

Indian painting divides into two great traditions defined by scale and support: the monumental mural (on walls of caves and temples) and the intimate miniature (on palm-leaf, paper, cloth). Reading any painting question well means first placing it in one of these streams, then in a school.

Mural — large, on prepared wall surfaces; narrative and religious; Ajanta is the fountainhead.
Miniature — small, on portable supports; began on palm-leaf (Pala, Jain) and flowered on paper under the Mughals and Rajput courts.
The Shadanga (six limbs) is the classical Indian canon of what makes a good painting — a favourite one-mark fact.

GS-I hook: Painting tracks patronage — monastic (Ajanta), imperial (Mughal), and princely/devotional (Rajput-Pahari); each patron reshaped subject, scale and style.

2. Prehistoric Rock Art (Bhimbetka)

The oldest Indian paintings are the rock shelters of Bhimbetka (Madhya Pradesh, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 2003), where hunter-gatherers painted from the Upper Palaeolithic into historical times — a continuous record of prehistoric life.

Pigments were natural mineral ochres — red (haematite), green (from a green stone), white (limestone) — mixed with binders; the durability comes from mineral colour on quartzite.
Other sites: Jogimara caves (Chhattisgarh, some of the earliest), and rock art across the Vindhyas — but Bhimbetka is the exam anchor.

Prelims trap: Bhimbetka = Madhya Pradesh, UNESCO 2003; the most numerous paintings are Mesolithic. The largest (big-game) figures are the earliest (Upper Palaeolithic).

3. The Mural Tradition & Ajanta

The mural tradition reaches its summit at Ajanta (Maharashtra, UNESCO), a set of 30 Buddhist rock-cut caves whose paintings (c. 2nd BCE–6th CE, mainly under the Vakatakas) are the fountainhead of Indian painting — the source that later murals and even miniatures echo.

secco/tempera (paint on dry ground), not true (buon) fresco

Technique: pigment applied to a dry lime-plaster ground (fresco-secco / tempera), not wet-plaster "true fresco" — a very common prelims discriminator.
Themes: the Jataka tales (previous lives of the Buddha), the life of the Buddha, and a rich secular world of courts, processions and daily life.
Famous panels: the Padmapani (Bodhisattva with a lotus) and Vajrapani bodhisattvas (Cave 1); the "Dying Princess"; Mara's temptation. Note the "Indian bend" (tribhanga) and expressive hand-gestures.
Compared with Ellora: Ellora paintings are later and include Hindu and Jain themes; Ajanta is wholly Buddhist and earlier.

4. Other Mural Sites

After Ajanta the mural impulse spread across regions and religions, each site adding a local accent. Knowing the site–dynasty–religion triad is the exam skill here.

The tradition is unbroken but the faith shifts — Buddhist (Ajanta, Bagh), Jain (Sittanavasal), and increasingly Hindu (Badami, Chola, Lepakshi) as royal patronage moves.
Style drift: the plastic, rounded Ajanta figure gives way over time to flatter, more linear and decorative forms (Lepakshi, Kerala) — anticipating the miniature line.

Prelims trap: Sittanavasal = Jain (Tamil Nadu); Badami = earliest Hindu murals (Chalukya); Lepakshi = Vijayanagara. Match site to religion and dynasty.

5. The Miniature Tradition (Pala & Jain)

The miniature — small-format painting on a portable support — begins in eastern India under the Palas (on palm-leaf) and in western India in the Jain manuscript tradition, long before the Mughals. These are the indigenous roots the Mughal atelier later transformed.

Support shift: palm-leaf → paper (introduced by the 14th–15th CE) enabled larger, more detailed miniatures and the great courtly schools that followed.
The Jain "farther eye": faces in three-quarter profile show the far eye projecting beyond the cheek — the single most recognisable marker of the Western Indian school.
These traditions supplied the conventions (flat colour, profile faces, narrative registers) that Mughal naturalism later reacted against.

GS-I hook: The miniature was Indian before it was Mughal; the Mughal achievement was not to invent the form but to fuse indigenous manuscript painting with Persian refinement and European naturalism.

6. Mughal Painting

Mughal painting (16th–18th CE) is the classic Indo-Persian synthesis — Persian technique and refinement married to Indian subjects and, later, European naturalism. It is a court art: secular, historical, portrait-driven, and tied to the personality of each emperor.

Features: fine line and modelling; realistic portraiture and profile faces; muted, naturalistic colour; hierarchical court scenes; nature studies; the use of the halo around the emperor.
Peak under Jahangir — a discerning patron whose atelier produced meticulous natural-history studies and psychologically acute portraits.
Legacy: when patronage waned under Aurangzeb, trained artists carried Mughal naturalism into Rajput, Pahari and Deccan courts — cross-pollinating regional schools.

Prelims trap: Mughal painting peaks under Jahangir (naturalism, portraiture, Mansur's birds); Akbar Indianised and industrialised it; Shah Jahan made it formal and jewel-like.

7. Rajasthani & Pahari Painting

As Mughal patronage receded, the princely courts of Rajasthan and the Himalayan foothills (Pahari = "of the hills") developed distinctive schools. Where Mughal art was secular and realistic, these were largely devotional (Krishna-bhakti), lyrical and richly coloured.

Themes: Krishna-lila and the Gita Govinda, Ragamala (visualising musical modes), Baramasa (the twelve months), Nayaka-Nayika (hero-heroine) types, and epics — bhakti made visible.
Rajasthani vs Pahari: Rajasthani tends bolder, flatter, more vigorous; Pahari (esp. Kangra) is softer, more lyrical and naturalistic — the Mughal influence filtered through hill sensibility.
Bani Thani (Kishangarh, under Sawant Singh/"Nagari Das", artist Nihal Chand) is India's "Mona Lisa" — the exam's favourite single work.

GS-I hook: Rajput and Pahari painting turned the miniature into an instrument of bhakti — the god Krishna, not the emperor, becomes the hero; devotion, season and raga fuse into image.

8. Deccan Painting

The Deccan sultanates (Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmadnagar) developed a parallel court school that blended Persian, Turkish and indigenous Deccani elements — often richer in colour and more opulent than contemporary Mughal work.

Centres: Ahmadnagar (earliest), Bijapur (under Ibrahim Adil Shah II, a great patron), and Golconda — each with a distinct palette.
Features: lavish use of gold and rich colour, tall willowy figures, lush vegetation, a dreamy, opulent mood; independent of Mughal naturalism until the two later merged.
Absorption: after Mughal annexation of the Deccan, the styles interpenetrated, and later still fed into the "Company" idiom.

Prelims trap: Deccani painting = Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmadnagar — independent of, and initially richer than, Mughal painting; Ibrahim Adil Shah II of Bijapur is the classic patron.

9. Conservation & Contemporary Relevance

The murals and manuscripts are fragile and often endangered, making conservation a live governance theme UPSC can link to art history.

Ajanta conservation: humidity, past over-restoration and visitor pressure threaten the murals; ASI and international bodies run careful stabilisation — a case study in heritage management.
Manuscript heritage: the National Mission for Manuscripts documents and conserves India's vast manuscript corpus, including illustrated Jain and Pala material.
Repatriation & GI: traditional painting forms feed into living crafts and GI tags (e.g. Kangra, Madhubani in the folk file), linking art history to livelihoods.
