The decline of court patronage and the arrival of colonial rule broke the old miniature tradition and forced Indian painting to reinvent itself. Two currents result: a modern mainstream (academies, nationalism, modernism) and a persistent folk/tribal reservoir that never depended on courts at all.

The modern story is a debate about identity — how much to borrow from the West and how much to revive the indigenous.

2. The Company School

"Company painting" is the hybrid style produced by Indian artists (often trained in the Mughal/regional tradition) working for officers of the East India Company. It marks the first sustained meeting of Indian technique with European taste.

Patrons & purpose: European officials wanted documentary images — natural history (birds, plants), festivals, castes and occupations, monuments — as souvenirs and records.
Style: Indian artists adopted European watercolour, perspective and shading while retaining Indian subjects and delicacy — a transitional, hybrid idiom.
Centres: Murshidabad, Patna (the "Patna Qalam"), Delhi, Thanjavur, Madras — wherever the Company established itself.
Critique: often dismissed as derivative "bazaar art", yet it kept Indian workshops alive and documented a vanishing world.

3. Raja Ravi Varma

Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) is the pivotal figure of academic realism — the first Indian painter to master European oil technique and turn it to Indian mythological subjects, then to democratise images through mass-produced oleographs.

Style: Western academic oil-painting — realistic anatomy, drapery, perspective — applied to gods, epics and elegant sari-clad women.
Mass reach: his oleograph press put affordable prints of Lakshmi, Saraswati and epic scenes into millions of homes — shaping how Indians picture their gods to this day.
Legacy & critique: celebrated for accessibility and technical skill; criticised by later nationalists (the Bengal School) as too Western and sentimental.

4. The Bengal School

The Bengal School (early 20th CE) was the visual arm of the Swadeshi movement — a conscious revolt against Western academic realism (including Ravi Varma) in favour of an "Indian" and pan-Asian aesthetic rooted in Ajanta, Mughal and Far-Eastern traditions.
