Rules & conventions: Sanskrit plays followed strict Natyashastra norms — a happy/auspicious ending, no on-stage death or violence, use of prose & verse, a Sutradhara (stage-manager/narrator), and characters speaking Sanskrit or Prakrit by rank.
Ten forms (Dasarupaka): the Nataka (heroic, e.g. Shakuntala) and Prakarana (invented plot, e.g. Mrichhakatika) were the principal types.
Decline: loss of royal patronage, the rigidity of Sanskrit (understood by few), and the rise of regional languages ended the tradition by early-medieval times — but its conventions passed into ritual forms like Koodiyattam.

3. Folk Theatre — North & West

Jatra (Bengal) is a loud, emotional, music-driven theatre that began as devotional (Chaitanya's Krishna-cult) and became a mass entertainment and even a vehicle of political/social messaging.
Ankia Naat (one-act play) and its performance Bhaona were created by the saint-reformer Sankaradeva in Assam to spread Neo-Vaishnava Bhakti — theatre as religious teaching (using a language, Brajavali).
Yakshagana (Karnataka) is a spectacular dance-drama with towering head-gear and painted faces, enacting Puranic tales — a cousin of Kathakali in scale.
Therukoothu (Tamil Nadu) is a rural "street theatre" centred on the Mahabharata, especially the story of Draupadi.

5. Koodiyattam & Ritual Theatre

Kerala preserves the living remnant of Sanskrit theatre — Koodiyattam — along with a family of ritual temple-theatre forms. This is the single most exam-relevant theatre item for its UNESCO status.

Koodiyattam (Kerala): the oldest living Sanskrit theatre tradition (over 2,000 years), performed in temple theatres (Koothambalam) by the Chakyar community; it preserves classical acting (netra abhinaya — eye expression). Proclaimed a UNESCO Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage (2001) — among India's first.
Chakyar Koothu: a solo narrative/monologue temple performance (by the Chakyar), a relative of Koodiyattam that allowed satire and social comment.
