Ikat vs Bandhani: Ikat resist-dyes the threads before weaving (blurred-edge pattern); Bandhani ties knots on finished cloth (dotted pattern) — a favourite discriminator.
Ajrakh is a labour-intensive, double-sided natural-dye block-print of Kutch, traditionally in deep indigo and madder red.

Prelims trap: Ikat = thread-resist (pre-weave); Bandhani = tie-dye on woven cloth; Ajrakh = block-print. The technique, not the region, is usually the answer.

4. Textiles III — Embroidery

Embroidery decorates cloth with needle and thread; India's regional stitches are among the most-tested craft–region pairs. Learn each by its home state and its signature stitch or material.

Chikankari (Lucknow) is delicate white-on-white shadow-work; Phulkari (Punjab) is bold, bright darning-stitch flower-work — opposite temperaments.
Zardozi is the opulent metallic (gold/silver-thread) court embroidery, revived for bridal and ceremonial wear.
Kantha upcycles worn cloth into quilted, story-telling textiles — a sustainable folk craft of Bengal.

5. Pottery & Terracotta

Bidriware gets its dramatic black-and-silver look from a special soil treatment that permanently blackens the zinc alloy, throwing the inlaid silver into relief.
Dhokra is the same ancient lost-wax method as the Harappan Dancing Girl — a continuous tribal tradition producing figurines and jewellery.
Thatheras of Jandiala Guru (Punjab) is India's craft on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage list.
