2. Lunar, Solar & Luni-Solar in Practice

The three types are not just theory — they explain why festivals behave differently. Purely lunar dates walk backwards through the seasons; solar dates stay put; luni-solar dates wobble within a season. Two more distinctions matter for MCQs: the amanta vs purnimanta reckoning of the lunar month, and the two fortnights.

Why Ramzan/Id shifts ~11 days earlier each year: the Hijri calendar is purely lunar (354 days), with no intercalary month, so it slides against the solar seasons.

Vikram Samvat is the most widely used traditional Hindu calendar in north and western India, and the basis of many Hindu festival dates. It is a luni-solar calendar with a distinctive epoch that puts it well ahead of the Gregorian year.

Epoch: begins in 57 BCE, traditionally linked to King Vikramaditya of Ujjain (celebrating a victory over the Shakas). Add 57 to a CE year for the (approximate) Vikram year: 2026 CE ≈ VS 2083.

4. Saka Era & the National Calendar

The Saka era is the single most exam-important calendar because it is the basis of India's official National Calendar. Learn its epoch, its adoption date, its first month and the simple conversion to Gregorian.

Epoch: begins in 78 CE (associated with the Kushana king Kanishka's accession, per common tradition). Saka year = CE year − 78 (after its New Year): 2026 CE = Saka 1948.
National Calendar of India: the Saka calendar was adopted as the official National Calendar on 22 March 1957, on the recommendation of the Calendar Reform Committee. It is used alongside the Gregorian in the Gazette of India, All India Radio news, government calendars and communications.

7. The Panchang & Time-Units
