Static/factual — the order of civilian awards (Bharat Ratna > Padma Vibhushan > Padma Bhushan > Padma Shri), the gallantry order (Param Vir Chakra highest wartime), and the field of each cultural prize (Jnanpith = literature; Phalke = cinema). High recall.
Thematic/structural — grouping: civilian → gallantry (wartime vs peacetime) → arts/Akademi → literary → international. Structure and hierarchy.

1. Overview & Hierarchy

A national honours system recognises exceptional service, valour and achievement, and signals the values a nation prizes. India's awards fall into clear families — civilian, military/gallantry, and specialised arts and literary honours — each with its own hierarchy and conferring authority. Getting the order within each family right answers most MCQs.

Conferred by: civilian and gallantry awards are conferred by the President of India (announced on Republic Day/Independence Day); arts awards by the respective Akademis; literary prizes by trusts/foundations.
Not a "title": Padma/Bharat Ratna cannot be used as a prefix/suffix to the name (Article 18 abolishes titles) — a favourite MCQ.
Family-first memory: fix the hierarchy inside each family, then attach names/firsts.

2. Civilian Awards

The civilian awards are the apex of national recognition for distinguished service in any field. Their hierarchy, instituting year and a few landmark firsts are the most tested facts in the topic.

Bharat Ratna: the highest civilian award (instituted 1954), for exceptional service/performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour. Not restricted to Indian citizens (e.g. Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela — honorary). No monetary grant; a maximum of usually 3 in a year.
Padma Awards (1954): in three descending grades — Padma Vibhushan (exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of high order), Padma Shri (distinguished service). Across all fields including art, social work, science, sports, trade.
First Bharat Ratna (1954): C. Rajagopalachari, S. Radhakrishnan and C. V. Raman.
Youngest/notable: Sachin Tendulkar was the first sportsperson to receive the Bharat Ratna (2014).
Article 18 caveat: these are awards, not hereditary titles; misuse as a name-prefix can lead to forfeiture.

3. Gallantry & Service Awards

Military honours reward valour, and split into wartime and peacetime series — a distinction the exam loves to test. Learn the two parallel ladders and the top award of each.

Wartime gallantry (in the face of the enemy): Param Vir Chakra (PVC) — highest > Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) > Vir Chakra (VrC).
Peacetime gallantry (away from the battlefield): Ashoka Chakra — highest > Kirti Chakra > Shaurya Chakra.
First PVC: Major Somnath Sharma (1947 J&K operations, posthumous).
Distinguished service (non-combat): Param Vishisht Seva Medal > Ati Vishisht Seva Medal > Vishisht Seva Medal.
Note: both series were instituted in 1950 (with Independence-era origins); all conferred by the President.

4. National Arts & Akademi Awards

The arts have their own national honours, conferred by the three Akademis and the film establishment. These are the culturally specific awards most likely to appear in an Art & Culture paper.

Sangeet Natak Akademi Award & Fellowship: the highest national recognition for performing artists (music, dance, drama); the Fellowship (Ratna Sadsya) is the most prestigious, limited in number.
Sahitya Akademi Award & Fellowship: the top literary honour by the national academy of letters, given in 24 languages annually; the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship is its highest honour.
Lalit Kala Akademi Award: for visual/fine arts (painting, sculpture, graphics), including the National Exhibition awards.
Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1969): the highest award for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema; first winner Devika Rani. (Distinct from the annual National Film Awards.)
Tansen Samman, Kalidas Samman: state honours (Madhya Pradesh) for classical music and the classical arts, respectively.

5. Literary & Other Honours

Beyond the Akademis, private trusts confer India's most prestigious literary prizes. Learn the field, the founder/trust and any language restriction — the Jnanpith is the most frequently tested.

Jnanpith Award (1961/first awarded 1965): India's highest literary award, by the Bharatiya Jnanpith trust, for outstanding contribution to literature in any of the recognised Indian languages (including English since 2013). First winner: G. Sankara Kurup (Malayalam).
Vyas Samman & Saraswati Samman: literary awards by the K. K. Birla Foundation — Saraswati Samman for a work in any of the 22 scheduled languages; Vyas Samman for Hindi literature.
Moortidevi Award: another Bharatiya Jnanpith literary award.
Vachaspati / Bihari Samman: K. K. Birla Foundation awards for Sanskrit and Rajasthani/Hindi respectively.
Gandhi Peace Prize: an international award by the Government of India for social, economic and political transformation through non-violence.
